Chlasts ProjectWith the growth of science and technology, number of laboratories has also increased throughout the world. This brings to the fore the need for proper safety measures in laboratories for both academic and industrial sectors. This project takes up this concern and stresses on the safety training needs for anyone who works in a laboratory whether students, teachers or researchers. The effort is to introduce the best practices and skills in a laboratory.

The primary goal of the project is to develop a standard set of best practices for safety while working in laboratories through guidelines and manuals. For this, it is essential that the existing practices and techniques be assessed and improved upon to reach the desired standards of health and safety in laboratories. Once this is done, the next step will be to make this training material available to the users concerned through a variety of media. They can be printed matter like manuals and pamphlets; digital versions like CD ROMs, DVDs, video clips or even online databases on the World Wide Web.

Laboratory safety measures begin with recognizing the threat. Once you recognize the hazard, the use of common sense and anticipatory safety attitude is all you need to keep yourself at bay from unwanted disasters. One must avoid working in conditions of fatigue and stress, working in haste or with a preoccupied mind while in a laboratory. Personal safety gears must be used at all times and one must notify the authority about any unsafe condition immediately.

Laboratories are used by various people in many fields and safety measures are vital for them. Our chief target groups are:

  • Students and teachers involved in courses which require the use of laboratories
  • Industrial laboratory personnel and operators
  • Academic teachers
  • Technicians in charge of maintenance
  • Researchers in the industrial and academic sphere

What we aim to achieve from this is to create awareness for anyone who is exposed to circumstances which can harm them if proper precautions are not taken about the safety measures. We expect the following results from the project:

  • The most comprehensive illustrations of best practices in safety practices will be developed and distributed
  • Standard training units will be developed and implemented
  • A comprehensive and active website will be created which will also house active discussion forums on the subject
  • A dictionary will be created and published, preferably in multiple languages

We aim to achieve these results by way of all-inclusive training modules and by urging users to implement them for their own safety while working in the field. Occasional safety inspections and disaster drills can go a long way in helping create awareness. You can avoid a lot of undesirable mishaps through proper knowledge and the consequent precautionary behaviour. This will not only ensure the safety of individuals working in the laboratories but will also enhance their efficiency. Subsequently, laboratories will become safer places where people can simply concentrate on learning, research and manufacturing pursuits.
